Shiloh Park Elementary School Team!

Shiloh Park Elementary School recently participated in their 5th Annual Relay Recess. Relay Recess is a school community fight against cancer, with a focus on healthy habits, eating right, sun safety, and exercise. Shiloh’s Relay Recess encourages school communities to teach our students about community service while giving back. Our students spent the week learning about these topics in class and have made cards for cancer survivors at the Cancer Treatment Center of America here in Zion, and for survivors who will attend the Relay For Life of Northern Lake County in September. They decorated luminaria bags for our school and to donate to the Lake County Relay. In addition, the students brought in coins for Penny Wars to raise money that will be donated to the American Cancer Society and candy to make little treat bags for cancer patients at various hospitals in Lake County.

On the day of the walk, 5th Grade students went outside to decorate for others in the school. During this activity, they took time to remember a former classmate who battled cancer. It is because of people like their classmate that they work to fight cancer. After decorating, classes took turns taking laps around the school to take a step against cancer. We finished our walk and ended our week-long events with a Pie in The Face event. The grade level that won the Penny Wars were able to choose students from their class to throw a whip cream pie in the face of his or her teacher! We had a blast, we came together as a school community, and gave back to The Cancer Treatment Center of Zion and The American Cancer Society.
