Kindergarteners visited the Cape Royds Adelie Penguin Rookery via Skype with Antarctica Penguin Scientist, Jean Pennycook.Mrs. LaBelle's kindergarteners recently Skyped with Antarctica Penguin Scientist, Jean Pennycook. This is the 5th year that Mrs. LaBelle's kindergarteners have visited with Ms. Pennycook at the Cape Royds Adelie Penguin Rookery, which is over 15,000 miles from our classroom. The day we "visited," Ms. Pennycook was able to go out onto the ice and stand amongst the penguins even though the temperature was -35 degrees (that was without the windchill). The students were able to observe the Adelie's, both adults and 4-week-old babies, who still had their downy fur. These penguins were within a week of traveling about 4,000 miles North for their winter season. An interesting fact that Ms. Pennycook shared, as we were listening to hundreds of penguins "chirping," is that the mama penguins can tell their nestlings distinct chirp apart from all the other babies calling for their moms! It was a pretty amazing afternoon!
